Strategy

Coal of Africa is primarily focused on the acquisition, exploration and responsible development of thermal and coking coal projects in South Africa. The shift from being an exploration and development stage company to an operating company was made in 2008, when mining operations started at the Mooiplaats thermal coal mine near Ermelo in the Mpumalanga Province. Thereafter in January 2010, Coal of Africa completed the acquisition of the Nucoal Group, which included the Woestalleen Colliery and Processing Plant. Coal of Africa currently has a pipeline of two coking projects at various stages of exploration with the first of its coking coal projects, Vele, expected to commence production in first half of 2012. Coal of Africa has secured access to critical rail and port infrastructure through Maputo’s Matola coal terminal and can effectively service both burgeoning domestic and international demand for coal.

We will deliver on this strategy by:

  • employing staff with appropriate skills and experience to bring projects on line safely, responsibly and cost-effectively;
  • developing and operating our assets in compliance with the law; and
  • active, regular and transparent consultation with our stakeholders to achieve mutually favourable outcomes.

Coal of Africa also owns NiMag, which manufactures nickel magnesium alloys. The company is considered to be non-core and is currently in a disposal process.
